Preparing for your Goethe or telc B2 exam?

If you’re already working towards B2, you probably know that the exam is a little different from simply attending German classes. This is something we see quite often with students.

They have been studying German for a while. They can understand quite a lot, they can have a conversation and they feel reasonably comfortable with the language. Then they start looking at the actual exam and realise that knowing German and knowing how to handle the exam are two different things.

Where Are You Losing Marks?

This is usually more useful than simply doing one practice test after another. For example, you might be quite comfortable with reading but find speaking difficult. Another student may speak reasonably well but struggle to write. Someone else may understand the German but lose marks because they don’t manage their time properly. So we don’t believe every student needs exactly the same preparation.

We look at where you need more work and prepare accordingly.

That’s a much better use of your preparation time.

Goethe or telc B2 Preparation

If you’re taking a Goethe or telc examination, you should know which exam you’re preparing for before you start your final preparation.

The format, tasks and expectations matter.

If your German is already at the required level, focused preparation can help you become much more comfortable with the examination itself.

And if you are preparing for a specific requirement for Germany, we would also suggest checking exactly which certificate and level your university, employer or professional pathway accepts before booking the exam.

Don’t assume that because another student took one particular exam, you need to take the same one.

B2 Preparation for Students Planning Germany

For some students, the B2 certificate is part of a larger Germany plan.

You may be preparing for further study, work or a professional pathway where a German language certificate is required.

In that situation, the certificate is important but so is being able to actually use the German you’ve learnt.

That’s why we don’t look at exam preparation as simply doing mock tests until you remember the pattern.

You need to understand the tasks, practise them properly and know where you’re struggling.

Already at B2?

If you’ve reached B2 and your next step is the Goethe or telc examination, this is the stage where focused preparation can make sense.

You don’t necessarily need to keep going through general German lessons.

You may simply need someone to work with you on the examination, identify your weaker areas and give you enough practice to become comfortable with the format.
